#spiral galaxy

A flat disk of stars, gas and dust turning round a bulging core of old stars, with bright arms winding out from the middle. The arms are bright because the gas squeezed in them makes new stars, young and hot, which burn out before they drift far from the arm; most of the disk's stars are older and dimmer, and spread all round it.
