#self-shadowing
A cloud or smoke darkening itself: the light reaching a point inside it has passed through the rest of it first. A shader finds out how much with a light march, a second, shorter march from the point toward the light, adding up the density on the way and letting through exp(-sum), as Beer and Lambert's law says.
