Making a rich tone from two sine waves: the phase of one, the carrier, is pushed back and forth by the other, the modulator. How hard it is pushed, the index, decides how bright the tone is; the ratio of the two frequencies decides whether the partials fall on harmonics (a whole-number ratio) or between them, as a bell's do.
