#accretion disk

The flat ring of gas spiralling into a black hole or a star, heated white-hot by friction and orbiting faster the nearer it is, as the planets do. Seen from near a black hole, the far side of the disk appears above and below the hole, because the hole's gravity bends its light over and under.
